Sharing Between Macs and Windows-Based PCs
The MAC user probably has heard of this program. By using it, you can share printers, hard drives, folders, files and so on. The price for Dave is about $149 for a single user licence and it uses the fast, industry standard Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) instead of Apple-Talk. It is also designed specifically for the Apple Macintosh. After you install it on the Macintosh, no additional software is required and it works for all current versions of the Mac Os, including OS X.
If you install Dave for the first time, the setup assistant will launch. Tell Dave what type of Windows you use and follow the step screen. You will also need to enter a name for your MAC as well as identify the name of the Windows network work-group.
But if you have the latest version of MAC (OS X-Jaguar or OS X v. 10.2), you don't need DAVE. It will work right out of the box with any Windows network for things like file sharing. An advice regarding the file and printer sharing between MAC and PC is not to use the program MacSOHO. XP. Microsoft has decided to eliminate support for NetBEUI from its new release, Windows XP, and MacSOHO uses the NetBEUI protocol. Get DAVE instead.
But what if you have a MAC network and you want to share files? How do you proceed? The MAC OS v. 10.2 has incorporated a networking system called Rendevous. Rendezvous is based on an open Internet standard (IETF [Internet Engineering Task Force] Zeroconf) and it is being
adopted by a number of manufacturers outside Apple.
